Very rare pair of large paint-decorated ballroom candle sconces made of rolled sheet iron, each with oval back plate with punched dot perimeter, polychrome decorated with floral filled vase on a red slab beneath red swagged drapery with mustard yellow trim on a black ground. Back plate joined to a down-swept folded edge candle arm continuing to a dish shaped drip-pan with folded rim candle cups. Expected wear commensurate with age and use, including worn original paint surface, one back plate with in use solder reinforcement. Normal and expected oxidation. Good overall condition.
Late 18th to early 19th century American.
