Lyman Cole was born on May 28, 1812 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. His father was Moses Dupre Cole a well known portrait artist who had moved to Newburyport, Massachusetts from France. Moses trained his children to become portrait artists. They were very much like the Peale family of Philadelphia. Lyman along with his two brothers Joseph Greenleaf Cole and Charles Octavius Cole made their living painting the important families of New England. Their portraits are in all the major museums and historic homes throughout the northeast. Lyman is sited in all the major reference books and his work is much coveted by collectors.
